changing file types

How do you change the file type of a camcorder clip that i have downloaded from my everio hdd camcorder to my pc as i am unable to import files to edit in windows movie maker as it does not support .mod files.

any suggestions greatly appreciated

Several video packages are mentioned, but one guy says he had success, just by changing the extension of the file from .MOD to .MPG.
