Ipod file recovery

does anyone know of a freeware program to recover files from an ipod?

the situation is that due to size of music files no copy of the music is kept on the hard drive, itunes was set for manual update and all was well - however on itunes update itunes deleted some of the music from the ipod before it could be stopped... could anyone offer a solution to this prob that won't cost anything (other than burning everything back onto the thing again)
