As discussed in a previous question: It used to be the case that AOL were not an ISP, but rather a Service Provider. This means that you never actually became part of the Internet as you would with any other ISP, but rather used their software to access their servers, which in turn provided you with web and email access. If this is still the case, you won't have an IP address (and if you do, it's not going to be a valid public IP address), and therefore you will NOT be able to route and manage TCP/IP traffic in the way required to share a network connection.
