D link router dropping connection

My router drops it's connection whenever I load a new program onto the PC. In particular it is not recognizing adsl coming down the phone line. It doesn't have to be a program that is internet linked in any way! The last time was after loading some new drivers for my printer. It never drops it at any other time but I need to restart the router every time I load any new program. Any ideas why this might be?
