Hi
I need to move my PC to another room, but Telewest have quoted me �75 to move my broadband connection !! I am connected via an ethernet cable from the B/Band modem to the PC. Would it be possible to use a router connected to the modem and left in the first room, and then move the PC to another room ? If anyone thinks this possible, can you please advise what kit I would need.

I also have Telewest broadband (and a router).

There are two ways of doing what you want, wired or wireless.

Note it may cost you more than �75, but you will be set up if you want to add another PC or laptop to the network at a later date.

WIRED.

Buy a wired router (make sure it is suitable for CABLE not ADSL). About 50 pounds

Buy a length on CAT5 ethernet cable to go from the router to your PC. About 10 pounds

You then need a network card in your PC. Many modern PCs already have a network card so you may have this already. Check the back of the PC. About 10 pounds if you need to buy one.

Here is a picture of the socket. It is NOT the same as your phone modem socket. Note the small diagram just above the socket.

This is the easiest to set up, but you do have a problem of getting the Ethernet cable from the router to the PC.

If you are able to hide the cable then I suggest going for this option.

WIRELESS

Buy a Wireless router (again CABLE not ADSL). A wireless router can also take a Cat 5 ethernet cable as well.

Buy a wireless card for your PC (unlikely to already have one). Internal one looks something like this.

Fit the card into your PC.

Set up Windows wireless networking.

If possible buy a router and wireless card from the same company. Some places like PC World or Staples do special deals of a combined package with router and card.

(note this is an EXTERNAL wireless card that plugs into your USB port.. Easier to fit.)

Wireless networking is more difficult to setup than wired, and is slower, and is more of a security risk.

Go for this if the wired route is not an option.

If you have Windows XP then there are some good overviews of home networking in the help.

Find Help from the Windows Start menu and search using phrases like Home Network or Home Networking.

There are some intro guides that explain the concepts very well.

I am on telewest and set up a wireless network with a linksys router.

It was a lot easier than I expected.
