I would look in the control panel under sounds and see if there is a .wav associated with AOL. If yes then dis-associate it. Alternatively, search the computer for *.wav then delete the culprit.
If you mean the screechy modem noise, you should be able to find your modem in Control Panel. If you go to its properties, you should be able to turn the modem speaker volume off.
You know LeMarchand, I didn't even think of that: good answer. I am obviously thinking within the box too much.
there's two, in 9x at least, when you've turned it down in cp modem, then got to cp internet options, click on connections, highlight isp, click settings, properties, modem and turn it down there too; [ 2 separate locations, you need to check them both ] Only one in xp though, cp modem afaik. :-)
To silence the screeching modem, go to the modem properties page in Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager (different systems vary) Look under Advanced, and there should be a box to enter "Extra initialisation commands". Type "m0" (without speech marks - an m and a zero). This is a generic command which works for most modems. If you wish to enable the sound again, type m1 in the same box.
