Whenever you're watching or recording TV, every 'active' channel (i.e. any channel being watched or recorded) requires its own separate tuner. For example, if you've got a basic TV with an old-fashioned VHS video-recorder, you can watch one channel on the TV and record another onto VHS tape because there are two separate tuner circuits in use. (The tuner inside the TV handles the programme you're watching, while the one inside the video recorder deals with the programme you're recording).
As far as I can see, from the Archos website, the Archos 404 does not have a TV tuner built into it. It uses the tuner inside the TV you're watching to provide the signal which it records. If you've only got one TV tuner circuit in use, you can only have one 'active' channel. So it won't be possible to record a different channel to the one you're watching.
Sorry!

Just to add to Chris's post.
If you have a VCR or similar device, you could use the tuner in that to record from whilst watching a different channel on the the TV, simply by taking the output from the VCR that would normally go to the TV and connecting it to the input of your Archos. You don't need to set the VCR to record - just turn it on and select a channel.

You've got two TV tuners: There's an analogue one inside the TV and a digital one inside the Freeview box. So (until whatever date that the analogue transmitter for your area will be turned off) you can watch analogue stations on the TV set while recording digital stations, from the Freeview box, on your Archos 404. (However, you won't be able to watch a digital channel while recording an analogue one).
If your Freeview box is only connected to your TV via a Scart lead, connect an aerial fly-lead from the 'aerial out' socket of the Freeview box to the aerial socket on the TV.
I assume that your existing set-up (for recording from your TV) uses a special lead to connect the TV Scart socket to the phono inputs on the Archos 404 DVR station. You should now use this lead to connect between the Scart socket on the Freeview box and the Archos 404 DVR station.
Your TV will now be able to receive the five analogue stations while your Archos 404 will record whatever digital station the Freeview box is set to.
