Vanishing external hard drive

I have just erased the contents of an external hard drive using Safe Mode (creating a new partition). Now when clicking My Computer in normal mode, there is no drive present (when connected with a USB cable).

I have erased the drive's contents in this way before but have never had this problem before - any help appreciated.

Try going to Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.
In the Storage section, choose Disk management.
Hopefully, you will see the external drive and its partition(s) there. You may need to format the new partition.
