Hyperlinks to PDFs on a common server

I've got Windows XP professional, and Office 2003. When I write hyperlinks to PDFs (in any of the Windows programs) held on a common server, they flash up for a nanosecond, but don't open. Links work to docs in other office programs, and open htmls etc. I've got the most up-to-date Acrobat reader. Which part of the package is causing the problem?
