Garmin streetpilot i3 SAT NAV

got a new sat nav for xmas, switched it on and it just says 'locating satellites' when i type in any address. the bar reciever on the top left of the screen registers only 1 bar then disappears.
it cant be the location as i live in aberdeen.
can anyone please help with this,
