I am planning to sell my mac computer and need to erase everything on the hard drive ,how can I do this ?

not quite sure what hes talking about !

you can reformat it but even that will leave an image of what existed previously.you will need to use some professional software to permanently remove any disk image.

search google for 'hard drive cleaner' or similar phrase.
Never tried it, but Disk Utility comes with the 'professional software' that mattk talks about.

Assuming you're on Mac OS X, boot from your install disc (put it in, restart, and when it turns back on hold down C).

Then once the installer starts, click installer (menu at top) -> disk utility. Choose your internal drive, and then choose the erase tab. Click the security button, and choose '7 times' (this should be sufficient).

Once that's done you should be able to carry on with the installer from the disc, and reinstall the OS your mac came with.
If you REALLY want to make it next to impossible to recover anything, ever....get a copy of 'Winternals' 2005.

This has a disk clear function that is up to US Defence standards and is pretty straight forward to use.
