No video for AVI files, audio is fine

In Windows Media Player 9 for XP Home, I can no longer play AVI files. My PC tries to connect to the codec server, and then I get an error downloading codec message.

This never used to be the case, and the files I want to watch have been watched on my machine before with no problems. I don't know what, if anything, I have installed since it last worked. Oh yes, and in DivX I can get video but no audio...

I am SO confused right now. And the same thing is happening on my partner's machine. :o(

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi shybear, why not open your avi with another app. e.g. Micrashaft MovieMaker2 or internet explorer or Irfanview by shift right clicking it and selecting 'open with' at least til you get a fix for your mplayer9 change file association you can always change it back later.. you know you got the codecs.

Thanks Answerbok. Have already tried MovieMaker, but it does the same thing, and tells me it couldn't connect to the codec server. Obviously DivX, which would be my next program of choice is no good. I shall download IrfanView and give it a go, and Internet Explorer doesn't seem to want to open it for some reason.

Aaargh! Thanks though :o)

Sorted it! Somehow the divx codec that had been used to record the AVI files I was trying to play had been lost or corrupted or something. When I tried to use Irfanview it told me which codec was missing, unlike MoviMaker, Media Player, DivX or Internet Explorer. So I uninstalled DivX, and reinstalled it, et voila it worked, so thanks Answerbokj for the suggestion. Didn't work directly, but helped me to fix it :)
Good old Irfanview; that's one hell of an app. under 1.4Mb too. :-)
