There is not going to be a 'switchover' to HD. Even if all programmes are broadcast in HD you will still be able to watch them on any tv.

We are switching over to digital tv, nationwide by 2012 at the very latest. Is that what you mean?
There's an earlier post on here about this too. Digital TV is not the same as HDTV. Digital (i.e., having a freeview box) is going to be required in a few years, HDTV isn't.

Note that when your region does switch over, if you don't have the required hardware then BBC will be required to supply it for you: hence why they're advertising it a lot to try and get you to buy it yourself now!
With HD you will have to pay extra to be able to see how well the newscaster has shaved.

I think I'll save my money.
I wonder if this is a common misunderstanding ?
A friend of mine went in our local comet enquiring about digital tv's and even the salesperson told him that in the next couple of years you will only be able to receive the HD signal !!!!!
Even when we switch to digital you still do not need to get a new TV.

If you are using a Freeview box, or a Sky box, or Cable box YOU ARE ALREADY GETTING DIGITAL.

As long as EVERY TV in your house is connected to one of the three above (Freeview, Sky or Cable) then when Analogue is switched off you should be OK.

NOBODY has to go to HD, it is optional and currently you have to pay extra for it.
