Looking for Freeware to keep prying family eyes from some private papers I got lost in a maze of sites and programs.
Any advice please.

No freeware needed if you're on XP, simply compress to a zip file and then password that file
or if its a word .doc file you can protect the pages themselves. in office xp or 2003, go to save as, tools, security. from here you can prompt for a password to open the page, or yuo can allow people to open the page but need a password to modify the text. you can choose through several encryption types depending on the security level needed.
The above two will suffice if it's just your family you want to stop (assuming they don't know too much about computers).

If you want more protection, get GPG (totally free). This will allow you to use government-grade encryption, incredibly secure.
