updating ipod

i got an ipod for xmas and when i go to the menu and click on ipod updater 2006-01-10 my computer doesn't allow me to do it. it says there's an error and asks me to send an error report, does anyone know why? plus my ipod doesn't show up in itunes, is it becuase i can't update it...just one last thing, my ipod was bought from bulgaria...could that be a problem even though my friend has one and works fine?
