On my laptop I've got 2 different USB controllers shown in the device manager. One of them says USB Root Hub and the other one says VIA Rev 5 or later USB Hub Controller. Are any of these USB 2 ports? If not then what is the difference between them? Thanks.

Only the very new PCs and laptops (ie within the last 6 months or so come fitted with USB 2). Also in device manager they are often called USB 2 devices. The USB device has two parts: the root hub and the controller, both of which are required for full operation. Thus, I regret to say, you seem to only have the USB 1.1 device. You can get USB 2 PCMCIA cards though.
