Having recently bought a DVD/VHS combination recorder I am uncertain as to what the difference is between DVD RW / and DVD Ram. The instructions are a bit vague, could anyone put it in laymans language for me.

DVD RW is a rewritable disk that can be recorded to, wiped and recorded over many, many times like a video tape.

DVD R can only be used once - it is a permanent recording. You can record several programmes on it until it is full up.

DVD RAM is yet another format that will not record on your recorder unless it is a RAM recorder.
Question Author
Thank you Ethel for your help, is there any advantage to buying DVD RAM, and would they be able to be played on other DVD's which are not RAM
The DVD RAM format has not really caught on.

It does have some advantages, but on the whole the public have ignored it.

I would use DVD - (minus) or DVD + (plus) DVD disks and ignore DVD RAM.
You must use the disks that are stated in your manual.

My dvd recorder can play all disk types, except DVD RAM, but will only record to DVD+ , not DVD -.
