Any time I signed into my e-mails or my online banking a little padlock icon would appear at the bottom of the page which meant the information I input was kept secure, but lately when I have signed in these websites the padlock isn't there anymore. Should I be worried? How can I get it back? Cheers.

Just a guess, but have you turned off the status bar?
Click View, and there should be a tick next to Status Bar, if not, just click on it to turn it on. This is a toggle, so if you click it when there is already a tick, that will turn it off.

Status bar is ticked
Are you now on IE7?

If so the padlock is no longer at the bottom of the page - it's at the top, immediately to the right of the address bar.

Why oh why do they mess?
