DVD Burning

When burning an avi/mpg/etc file onto a dvd, (I am using Titanium Toast and running Mac OS X by the way), do I need to compress the file? The details of the file say that it is less that 1GB, and the DVD holds nearly five GBs. But when I apply the media to the dvd before burning, it says that the file is gigabytes bigger than the file actually is. Anyone know of any Mac applications that would solve this problem for me? The avi/mpg etc. will have to be converted to DVD files, which will increase its file size a fair bit.

I've never used Toast but instead use Burn (it's free), which will do the conversion for you too. I think you may have the same problem though:

You could also convert the file, to a DVD and decide in the options to make it fit onto one DVD, with ffmpegx:
