Probably. They will also need written confirmation from a reputable repairer that Laptop is irrepairable. This will cost you about 25.
When I dropped my laptop and claimed on insurance they didn't want the old one (which I then connected to a screen and used as a desktop).

I also went to a couple of computer shops and asked them for a quote to repair the screen (around 400) which was obviously not worth it - this cost me nothing for the quote.

oneyedvic- which insurance company were you with?
CIS (Co-operative Insurance) - but bear in mind this was around 7 years ago
My info is based on Company I worked for.(Norwich Union). I am only with them as I get special Staff Rates otherwise they are far too expensive.

everhelpful- are norwich union expensive? it's who my parents are with as they can never be bothered to shop around so usually end up paying above the odds!

RE my laptop, the insurance company said they would get back to me in a few days over the phone and they would send someone round with a new laptop. They didnt mention the old one so i may have to give it to them or maybe not, i guess i'll wait and see what happens.
Norwich Union are expensive, but, you have to realise you only get what you pay for. Cheaper Insurers may have many more restrictions when claiming, such as Excesses to be paid for by the Insured. It is still worth shopping around though, but check that cover etc.is the same. Have you tried Uswitch.com or many similar sites where comparisons are made.Good Luck.

I need to buy a caddy i think to transfer all my uni work from the hard drive of my old computer to my new computer when they provide me with one. the problem is that i will need the old computer to do this so i hope they don't insist on having it. the damn thing wont even switch on, hence claiming but a computer experty person told me about 'caddies' which will transfer all your files.
A couple of years ago my 3 year old son broke the metal pin that the power cord connects to on my laptop.I was able to claim on household insurance, but had to get a letter from a reputable pc shop to say that the laptop was beyond economical repair. The insurance company never asked for my old laptop, which I then sold on Ebay for 150, and I ended up with a new, much higher spec of laptop

Teak- that's exactly what has happened to mine- it can't be plugged into the mains and now the battery has died so i literally can't switch it on. it's got all my uni work on though :( a friend of mine who fixes computers says he could give it a go but doubts it can be repeaired.
Hold out for a new one. Most policies now are New for Old.
