Can anyone recommend a good, easy to use software program for editing footage from my hdd vid camera? Ive taken lots of film and want to make it into a dvd with fading, background music, effects and titles etc.

Unfortunately HDD cameras record in compressed format (like DVD camcorders) so whilst it is possible to edit your movies, I doubt that the results will be particularly good, and I'm not sure that you will be able to achieve all the fancy stuff.

If you want to produce highly edited movies, there's really no current alternative to DV CamCorders.

If you use a mac, then iMovie will work well for you.
I was suprised to discover my Windows XP2 has 'Windows Movie Maker' built in and damn fine it is too!
Try Nero.
