Windows - Vista
9 Answers
The press is hot with news of this. I noted in today's Telegraph: "Overall, the new features are impressive. But there will be some gripes about the price in Britain, where Vista costs about twice as much as in the United States. Prices here will range from about 100 for a basic version, designed for home use, to 249 for the top-end "Ultimate" package. In the US, prices range from 52 to 127."
Is there any reason why I shouldn't by the American version? Will it work for me in the UK?

If you have an XP computer that is working fine then you will gain almost nothing by upgrading, and may give youself LOTS of problems.
I work with computers all day, and did my first XP to Vista upgrade last week on a PC just over a year old.
Vista could not find the sound drivers, so now I have a working Vista with no sound.
My advice to anyone would be:
If you are buying a new computer that has Vista on it, fine.
If you are thinking of upgrading to Vista DONT.

should do you just change the keyboard layout when installing and the location. Dont 100% know if that woud cause problems when activating. Still you could always change them after activation.
regarding your prices have you just converted $'s to 's if so then the price would be half as that is the exchange rate. if you were living in US it would cause the same dent in your pocket.

I am a bit surprised as normally your quite good but..
If we updated everything only when it broke we would all have pretty dull pc's
I guess your implying your have a tech job so why not search the manufactures web site for them? Or use a "proper " soundcard. Its not that unreasonable that on day of release not all drivers are out. There is a tool that lets you know what will work before you buy.
Your advise to people upgrading to vista would appear to based on your soundcard issue. Forgetting dx10, security, functionality and appearance

My question is perhaps academic .... my current operating system in the no-longer-supported by Microsoft ME. I am pretty fed up about this - heck the Millennium wasn't that long ago! I was always planning, at some point, to upgrade to XP but then along came Vista! I like to spend as little dosh as possible at all times (!) but I really don't now know what to do for the best. I suspect I will, as always, procratinate.

I dont understand why people are so afraid of being early adopters. Its not like your risking being Mr Betamax. If you wish to progress you will have to upgrade one day.
As always there are always the M$ people who will always hate them whatever they do good or bad.
Its the same every new OS people moaning it requires HOW MUCH RAM! There are bugs, it is not as quick as the last one , it costs x amount to buy.
I wonder if the people saying stick with xp are the same that said stick with 2000 last time?
