get yourself a Spectrum or C64 emulator which are avaliable from GAME etc. These have loads of classic games and there are always a few text based adventures. You could also do a search on Google and download an emulator and games free but that means hunting around for games.

I used to play one called "Jacaranda Jim" on my old 8086 PC. Maybe try hunting under that?
