Transfer items over to new computer?

I have just purchased a laptop from a friend, how can I transfer my music and phots etc over to my laptop?

If both machines incorporate card readers, then this would be the simplest method, If your pc has a CD writer and the laptop has a CD-Rom, then this would be another method.
If you have networking facilities, this is yet another means of transfer. Finally, physically connecting the two machines via a null modem cable, is yet another method.

Another alternative would be to use one of the new Memory sticks which hold an enormous amount of data and which can be used as an alternative to a CD.

I would use a USB key, like in picture:

They are fairly cheap, need no special software, and you can transfer data to them and from them very easily.

Even after this one-off move they are still very useful for storing mp3s and pictures and also for moving things from one computer to another.

You could do what I do and invest in an external hard drive. They are ridiculously cheap now for the sizes available. You can even get a 2.5" portable if you want to use it on the move.

Save all your music and photos on it, then you can use it on any computer you like. Here are a couple of highly recommended drives.
