Transfer items over to new computer?

I have just purchased a laptop from a friend, how can I transfer my music and phots etc over to my laptop?

If you have networking facilities, this is yet another means of transfer. Finally, physically connecting the two machines via a null modem cable, is yet another method.

I would use a USB key, like in picture:

They are fairly cheap, need no special software, and you can transfer data to them and from them very easily.
Even after this one-off move they are still very useful for storing mp3s and pictures and also for moving things from one computer to another.

You could do what I do and invest in an external hard drive. They are ridiculously cheap now for the sizes available. You can even get a 2.5" portable if you want to use it on the move.
Save all your music and photos on it, then you can use it on any computer you like. Here are a couple of highly recommended drives.
