As far as I know, this is unavoidable. You can either un-install messenger completely, or tell it not to remember your password and this way messenger cannot connect automatically.
try this >Lockergnomie Owen Holm offers a simple workaround for keeping that sucker from loading: "Just move the EXE to another folder - or delete it entirely. It doesn't stop outlook Express from working." There ya go! Most of us will find the application (msmsgs) tucked away inside C:\ Program Files \ Messenger. Another solution is to wipe it off the face of your system. On the Run command line, enter: "RunDll32 advpack.dll, LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf, BLC.Remove" (sans quotes with no spaces immediately following each comma). After confirming this action, it should be gone. As always, a backup is recommended before messing with any system component. < maybe delete it entirely is a bit hammer n chiselly but i did kill my messenger successfully by moving the exe on xp.
Although xyzz@bok may be right that will stop meesenger working at all. If you want to just stop messenger from signing in when you start Outlook Express then you need to add a registry key. If you feel confident doing that then the instructions are here http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/989/
