How to post links on a thread?

Would some kind person explain how to post links onto a thread, please? I often notice that others have done so to illustrate a point they are making, (or for other peoples' amusement), and am curious as to how to go about it. So here's hoping someone will enlighten me! Thanks in advance. ( I hope I'm putting this query in the right section.)
