Hi,
Out of the blue lately when I click on my IE icon on the desktop, instead of starting the program it creates another icon, clicking on that new icon does nothing at all. However many times I click on the original icon creates more and more new ones, each with a number ("Internet Explorer 2,3,4" etc). The program will launch as normal from the start menu. Any ideas why this has happened?! I have tried deleting and replacing the original icon without effect. I am using XP home by the way.

Many thanks.

It sounds like you might have a virus similar to Win32.Bride.A@mm (virus exploits the IFRAME vulnerability in Internet Explorer 5.xx.) Are you sure that the icon on the desktop is Internet Explorer and not just Explorer.exe?

Do you run any from of anti-virus software? If so, is it up to date? Which version of internet explorer do you use?
If you right-click on the icon and select PROPERTIES, it should tell you what the target application is (Should be "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE")

Thanks for those answers, I use F-Secure07 internet security suite, and yes it is up to date. The IE version is no 6.0.29. When I click on properties I cant then see anyting that says what the target aplication is.
I now have a much easier life I don't use Internet Explorer I use Firefox suggest you do too

Well, actually I do use firefox, but Explorer is still there on the desktop, and I do use it occasionally, and if its not working id still like to know why!
When you RIGHT-click on the icon, what do you see when you click on PROPERTIES ?

I see a box titled internet properties, showing my home page, temporary internet files and history sub headings. Plus tabs for security, privacy, content etc.
Then I would delete that icon and create a shortcut from your start menu, then transfer it to your desktop or quicklaunch bar.
