how do you video something from your tv which has internal freeview thanks in anticipation

You need to connect a Scart lead from your TV to your VCR (or DVDR). If there's a choice of sockets, you should use the 'Out' socket on the TV and the 'In' socket on the recorder.
The recorder should be set to record 'AV', not to any numbered channel. Channel selection is done on the TV. Because you've only got one digital tuner (inside the TV), you can't record one channel while watching another. You can only record the channel which the TV is switched to. Also, as puszzleRus states, the TV needs to be turned on for the recording to work. (If the TV is turned off, your only digital tuner won't be in use).
