OK i'm pretty new to Windows XP, and i was wondering if anyone knows a way to get rid of that annoying yellow/orange shading on 'new software' without opening it all? Thanks.

Yes....this is quite an easy one...must be if I got it!.....Right Click on the Start button...from the menu select Properties...select the start bar page and click on the customise button.......select the advanced page and the second option down is "Highlight newly installed programs", uncheck this box....click ok to exit and save changes....voila.
