Thank you isj032. Just downloaded your suggestion but it is not valid for Windows Media Player on XP so back to the drawing board.
Thats what I'm using, on windows media player, download the package, search it and download only the codec, it will allow you to play almost any video type through media player, just install the codec and not the player. :) I think i downloaded a free trial through download.com. I installed the codec and not the player, the trial was for 15 days, I've been using the codec for several months.. No messages to buy.
AVS player is the absolute mutts nuts. It would play a piece of toast if it could

Thank you Bigeye74. I have not yet tried a piece of toast but can now play a DVD. The other solutions offered would not work with Media Player; probably a different problem but at the moment I can play. What I cannot do is write to a disc in the CD-RW player. I want to record music on a DVD size disc to take on holiday but although the recorder is working it will not accept and record on Philips DVD+RW discs so I will look further. Thank you everyone for the help.
a CD-RW will not allow you to write to DVDs. They generally do play them though. You can pick up a new DVD burner for around 20 from amazon.

Thank you Bigeye. I only wanted to copy cd not dvd but I take your point. I was obviousy misinformed.

Further to my last message my device is Sony CRX3230EE which is working and should also burn as well as read with excellent professional reviews. I need to think some more about this.
I use a product called 'deepburner pro'. I find it very efficient and do quite a bit of burning with it
you may try movavi video suite, my friends recommend it to me, it can convert and burn DVD, CD, SVCD, very easy to use and works perfect for me, here is a guide about it
