American students could be given the option of using a mobile phone tracking system to try and keep them safe while on campus. Various new technologies are being developed in the wake of the horrendous attacks at Virginia Tech in April. The phone would allow the student to set a timer - for perhaps half an hour, when they leave their friends' dorm room to go back to theirs. If they return safe they can simply turn off the alarm, otherwise it would transmit their location every three minutes. Is this an idea that could catch on elsewhere in the world? Or is it simply an understandable over reaction to the tragedy?
