At some time we will be upgrading from our 98SE to an XP. On our present model we don't have a DVD/CD Re-writer, but we do have a spare bay for one if necessary. Is there a way of moving 400+ photos to a new model in the future without going to the expense of buying a re-writer? I would be grateful for any help. Thank you.

I would really reccommend a new CD-RW. But there is a feature on Windows XP called 'transfer files and settings' or something along those lines. You can transfer all data via a cable. But I warn you this will take ages. But is a cheaper option. If you put the Windows XP setup CD in your old system, a autoscreen will apear, choose the option from there. Many Regards.
Hi Cetti, i use this http://www.pcwebshopper.com/bafmacdattra.html usb data linq it shifts 1Gbyte in about half an hour they cost about 15 or less. Easy to use. also lets my old pc access the disks on my newer pc.

Thank you sam and xyzzy for your help. After reading your advice I've decided to buy a re-writer as well as the 'magic' cable as the present pc is a trifle unstable and couldn't bear to lose my precious stuff.

Could I ask another question? Is the re-writer easy to install - and will the 'magic' lead also transport My Documents as well as photos?

yes it does documents, it's all drag n drop intuitive the data linq transfers anything i use mine about once a week for backup reasons or moving dvd's :-)
