I just got this email today, from the National Enquiries office.

It doesn't say that individual nationalities are no more, but thats what has happened,

I would explain that since the commencement of the British Nationality Act '81, British nationals have been referred to as British citizens whereas prior to this ( under the provisions of the British Nationality Act 1948 ) they were referred to as British subject citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies.

I was in Scotland last Thursday and drove back into England on the A68.

You'll be pleased to know that there was a big sign - paid for and erected by the Government's Department of Transport - that said 'Welcome to England'.

Hi jtp, I did notice that, never knew it before, I thought it was all this goverment, just goes to show doesn't it, a little bit of digging brings up all sorts of things.

Doesn't it mean we were in fact banned from 1948 from calling ourselves English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish as from then we were British subject citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies - bit of a mouthful, British seems easier for form filling

Actually as a matter of interest it was this act I recall that deprived Hong Kong Citizens Falkland Islanders etc of the right to a British Parliament.

It was actually passed to stop a feared flood of refugees from Hong Kong after the handover to China.

This act is often claimed to have been interpreted by the Argentinians as Britain washing it's hands of it's colonies and contributed to their decision to invade the Falkland Islands in '82

Nationals of the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are British. We can call ourselves English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Cornish or anything else we choose but our nationality is British. I can't understand why so many peoiple on here get so worked up about this.

I am Welsh and will not accept to be anything else!

When I fill in forms, the option to put Welsh is there!
