Do dvd rw discs need to be formatted before use? If so,how do I do this? I have just bought an external DVD burner which records dvd+/- but the instructions are really lousy. Also, how do I know if I am recording either + or - because the software I am using (Roxio) does not give me any choices.

Not sure if this will help but my domestice DVD recorder (like a video machine) will write to DVD r/w without formatting. Secondly you'll know whether you are recording + or - by what is written on the disc, it's a hardware difference rather than software (that might not be strictly true but you have to buy discs in the corect format so it might as well be)
