The general advantage with a PDF document is that it can be viewed on multiple platforms. Take a word document for example if you send it in word format to a linux or mac user (or indeed a windows user who doesn't have word) he might not be able to read the file. If you send it in pdf he's likely to have a pdf viewer. The pdf veiwer software is relatively small and free to download, so it provides a way to share complex formated documents across platforms. Most browsers can have a pdf viewer included. The one big disadvantage is that you can't edit the documents, unless you have the full PDF software which does cost money.
