Will no antifreeze effect my motor

I;ve recently changed my water pump on a honda legend, not having any available i did not replace the antifreeze, i find that my car is {somtimes} loosing water and overheating, i have tried to find a leek but to no avail, i have now replaced the antifreeze and have yet to see if it makes a differance, my question is, "would a lack of antifreeze in my engine affect it to the point of loosing water and overheating after only a short period of motoring"
