I need to get broadband installed ASAP but I do not have a landline. I have some telewest boxes in my flat, from the previous occupiers.

Do I NEED a phone line? Because I would never use it. Also, people always say a BT phone line, does it need to be BT?

I would much prefer to have just broadband and cable. Will Virgin do this if I already have the boxes? I want the cheapest package possible. Thanks for your advice :-)

Sky - you must have a telephone line.

Virgin (telewest) no phone line required. I have Virgin broadband and have no land line at al, saving at least 10 -12 per month.

You can get a basic phone line package from BT, which lets you have broadband as well as receive incoming calls (but not outgoing), for about 12/quarter.
fo3nix - I know several people that would be very interested in such a service - I have searched the BT website and can only find BT Basic, which requires the user to be on certain benefits, and BT In Contact Plus.

Both have conditions that exclude a broadband internet service.

Which package are you referring to? You could be helping a lot of people here!
I've also just searched the BT website, for myself actually.

Less than a year ago I was renting a house, and specifically phoned BT customer services and asked for such a service. This is how I know how much it was.

I am now in the position of re-connecting a line in a new place, and am looking into this right now (I'm actually on hold to BT as I write this).

When I find out if the same service is still available, I'll report back.

Otherwise, misslideaway, I'd suggest the same as the above -- since you already have the telewest stuff, go with cable. The broadband is better than ADSL anyway.

Also, if you don't already have a BT line installed (i.e., no BT phone boxes on the walls), then you'll need to pay about 130 for connection.
We had a telewest box when we moved in to our house and it cost nothing for instalation of the modem on telewest(about 9 months ago now) and its a year contract for 17 per month, i ordered it over the internet which ment thefirst month wascheeper.
BT answer: sadly, the package I speak of above is no longer available. Guess BT realised that people were using that just for broadband, so you can't use broadband with that package any more.

The cheapest is now 11/month, which I'm on as of now.

A shame really.
Tiscali offer free line rental for a great price.

However, if you aren't already with BT then you need to get a BT line first, which involves signing a contract with BT for 12 months, which you can't get out of.

After the initial 12 months with a BT line though, you can stop the line rental with BT and move that to Tiscali too, saving you about 11/month.
