Start - my computer
Click 'View System Information' in the left hand pane
Hardware tab - device manager
A long list will appear. Scroll down until you see
IEEE 1394 bus host controllers - click on this. If you have the firewire it will show up there.
My Acer is a different model, but the firewire port is on the right hand side as I look at the screen.
If you do not have a firewire port but do have a PCMICA card slot (a credit card sized slot) you could buy something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Firewire-PCMCIA-Cardbu s-Videostudio-RYOTECH/dp/B000MS96X2/ref=pd_bbs _sr_1/202-5232245-3977438?ie=UTF8&s=electronic s&qid=1182178870&sr=8-1
All Acer laptops have an Acer Guide on the hard drive, which should show you where your ports are and what they do.

It doesn't appear to have Firewire according to the specs I can find, you could add it via a cardbus card but you might be better off getting a laptop with Firewire built in if it is important to you.
VHG, actually Firewire is still faster for transferring video and a lot less prone to seizing up your 'puter whilst doing so. I know that dumping from my camcorder to my laptop was a nightmare via USB until I bought a Firewire cable and then it worked like a dream.
