laptop screen has suddenly gone black

My dell inspirion laptop screen has suddenly gone black. I can barely see the desktop icons. I have tried rebooting and the brightness comes back but then screen goes dark again after about 10 secs. Any ideas???

I can turn my Acer screen off by pressing FN and F6.

Have you pressed something similar?

i had prob like this
all i got was some writing on top of screen.
got dell in under garuntee.
i got new motherboard ,new ram and heat sync.

motherboard was faulty.dead the guy said

its over 3 years old so past its warranty - I thought it might need a new backlight bulb.

Try pressing the FN Key TOGETHER with the key with a sign like the sun, (as a child would draw it ). This should sort it out.
