How do i stop it from scanning every time i log on?

Of course you can.
Double click on the AVG icon on the task bar (4 colored squares). It should display the Control Center.
The area in the centre has a list of things with a green tick against them.
Click on the Schedular line, then press the button Scheduled Tasks
The Scheduled Tasks window displays.
Select "Test plan in basic mode" then the "Edit Schedule" button.
The "Schedule daily test" window is displayed.
You can either change the time, or if you dont want it to run every day at all, just deselect the field which says "Periodically start scheduled anti-virus test"
