I cant answer the 2nd part of your question, you need someone with considerable more knowledge than i posess or ever hope to!
I have about 119 "friends" on myspace but only really bother with about 20 or so of them! When someone wants to add me then i just become a myspace tart and click accept! Makes me feel wanted ;-) I dont feel i have gained a "friend" more just like to give the impression that im considerably more popular than i actually am!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

There's a little boy on there who's suffering from a form of leukaemia who has over 20000 friends. His dad set up the page on his behalf (James & Daddy) with the aim of gaining 20000.
I only have 17 friends, some of whom are family and other people I'm good friends with in cyberspace. Others are well-known groups and writers I like (a couple of whom I've actually met and have sent me very nice messages). Having the more well-known bods on there means I then get bulletins telling me when gigs and other events are. It also serves to give others an idea of what sort of person I am.
I'm certainly not under the illusion that more than a handful of them give two-hoots about me, at the end of the day.
