What is the equivalent of windows' "ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMMES" on a mac?

I want to completely remove msn messenger from my macbook because everytime i sign in it pops up (unnecessairly because I use Mercury messenger now!)
Ive tried just dragging the icon from the dock into the trash but that doesnt seem to work. i want it gone!

I do not use MSN Messenger but I am sure there is an options in Windows which says "start when Windows starts" which you can turn off.

There must be an equivalent for the Mac version.

It's much easier on the Mac!

Simply go into /Applications (open a Finder window, and it'll be on the list to the left), and find MSN Messenger. Drag the icon to the trash, and erase it.

The dock icon you've been trying to put in the trash is just pointing to the app, and isn't the app itself.

ps. The best IM app on the Mac for MSN, AIM etc. is Adium.
