Motorway driving

My wife won't go in the fast lane on a 3-lane motorway. Do other people have this problem? Is it a woman thing?

I don't drive on motorways at all (but i have to this year to get to Glastonbury!), it's all too fast and it scares the living daylights out of me when people drive so dangerously at that speed. Many people are scared of flying, but there are so many fatal injuries on the motorways that the media just doesn't report them anymore. It's something that is expected to happen. plane crashes are very rare. Car crashes are so common that you don't really hear about them much. I guess this is why I don't like driving on motorways (let alone the fast lane!).........but then again, I am a woman!!

Tinker, you should REALLY come to Germany. getting kicked off the fast lane by some braindead (but legal) 170mph Porsche is definitely wort the trip.

Statistically, motorways are the safest roads. Only 2% of all accidents happen on them. This is mainly because although driving fast, everyone is going the same way. Don't worry Tinker. If you don't like driving at 100mph, you don't have to (and it is illegal!). Lane discipline is much more important. Pull over to the left lane when you can. BTW slimjim, there is no fast lane on a motorway. They are lanes 1,2 and 3(and sometimes 4).

Yes but you can see why the inside overtaking lane gets nicknamed the "fast" lane. You're supposed to be going faster than the vehicles in the outside and middle lane in order to overtake them. Consequently, people in the outside lane are going slower than the vehicles in the other two.

And I really wish more people would take on board the notion of Lane discipline suggested by sddsddean. Middle-lane drivers... I'm not even going to start! They don't even get the hint when you over take them and then have to pull back in ahead of them!

There's a strong argument that continously changing lanes is the most dangerous part of motorway driving. People who go from 1, to 2, to 3, overtake at 90+mph and then cut across from 3, to 2, to 1, and off the motorway in front of traffic are FAR more dangerous than if they just undertook a vehicle and left the motorway. Similarly, people who sit in the middle lane may well be doing so because of the fact that lane 1 can be heavily rutted by lorries, and to ensure they're not constantly changing lanes every time a slip road comes along - they've left you perfectly enough room to overtake, and as long as they're not crawling at 40-60mph it's not really an issue.
