A lot of laptops put them in a 'caddy' which you have to take out and then open to replace the drive. You should have a handbook that tells you where to find it. If not, try the laptop manufacturer's site for a service manual.
Generally speaking (without knowing the make or model of the laptop), they are on the opposite side to the battery. Turn the laptop upside down and look for a cover on the side of the laptop about 3 inches across, behind it on the underside of the laptop should be one screw, remove this and the hard drive should just slide out in its caddy. It should be near to the front.
Both my laptops, a Sony and an HP, have large covers on the underside held on be several screws. It's quite safe to remove the covers and will not invalidate the warranty as they also cover up the RAM, which you are allowed to increase. Once you get the cover off the disc will be obvious.
