Hi,
I had problems with my PC about 2 weeks ago when I downloaded and installed a windows update as my pc was turning off, in the morning it come with system error etc. I had to do a reinstall.
How can I make sure the windows updates aren't going to effect my pc after I have downloaded them and installed them

best you can do is backup your system using something like acronis truImage

to ensure you are up and running asap afterwards
always do a manual restore point (update should do this also .... but it never hurts
In your case ... if you can remember which update caused the problem you can disable individual downloads
so
alter the download option to download and inform me
then always do a manual update .... read what's on offer ... and decide for yourself.
My rule of thumb is NEVER update drivers ... always get the latest from the maker's site.

in the old days system admins would wait before installing updates.... sometimes for months
the problem these days is ...many of the updates are security related ...
some unfortunately will tie down some facility your software uses .... and systems crash.
without knowing your individual combination of software and hardware ... it's difficult to predict
(that's why system admin's go balistic when a punter "just installs" their camera or ipod .... or whatever screensaver they "must" have)
So it's the devil and the deep
