22 Answers
Hello, I have just bought a Maxtor 3200 External hard drive. I am having great difficulty installing it, I am going to device manager, hardware update wizard. This is what happens: it looks like its about to install it then this message comes up:
Cannot install this hardware.
There was a problem installing this hardware.
Maxtor 3200
an error occurred during the installation of the device.
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
Click finish to close this window.
Please help me, I am getting very desperate to back up my files.

Just a mo
the obvious questions seem to be being overlooked ppl are just assuming this year's model installed with XP
what OS
what service pacs
administrator or user profile?
how much ram
HOW OLD IS THE MACHINE?
usb 1 or 2?
what processor
what mobo (if you can ... but not essential
(most questions can be answered from system properties)
a system resource error normally isn't related to free disc space ....

Fairly recently, my PC crashed and I had it reformatted, I have still got the partition.
I went to install/download 11 Windows updates over the past few days and it only done 3, (the rest failed).
It sounds like my PC might be on its way out, I think the PSU might be a bit dodgy, so I really need to save all my music, pics, docs, etc. before I move house.

Can't see anything obvious
even though it's a PnP device .... and shouldn't need a drivers disc
xp will install an individual driver for that volume ...
1 q I forgot .... XP home or PRO?
neil is on the right track
unplug everything external (except keyboard, mouse and monitor)
finally .... try entering THE administrator account ...
and see if it picks up
then go to safe mode and try THE administrator again
Not sure why you think PSU - but that could contrib to your problems
At the mo I'm thinking corrupt installer ....
If that is the case ... it's crash and burn time (again)

go to the manufacturers site and look for an updated USB driver
This drive should install no problem without drivers etc
Does it load?
My computer> right click > manage>disk management> if recognised it will show up in there
This may be a drive letter conflict change it to another eg Z or X
Email if you get stuck and I wil try to help
