iPod random - how random is it really?

Being new to iPods I think I might be asking something that has been asked already; however, loaded a paltry 4091 songs on to my G5 and after a few goes at playing on Shuffle I have been surprised at the coincidences in the playlist I hear - my collection is quite eclectic but I get the feeling that the iPod is creating its own "random" playlist which matches style and genre before taking a tangent; which will then carry on in the same vein etc..
answers or thoughts please?

Hi BliiStickers , funny you should say that , I thought it was only coincidence that my ipod seems to have it's own preferences on shuffle play . The times I have my finger on and off the next option .:-)
