Has this ever happened to you? You go to your mail box expecting the regular, a few bills and your favorite magazine you had in subscription since your son or daughter was in junior high school. Come to find out you get some coupons, furniture specials, and a missing persons bulletin. How do you view unexpected mail? Is it considered "junk mail" (Hassle), another form of business communication, or is it viewed as community exchange of information? Or do you just shred it?

I have registered with the Royal Mail Opt Out so get no 'to the occupier' junk mail. Hurrah!

I am also registered with the Mail Preference Service so companies cannot send me unsolicited mail.

I sent pro forma letters to the companies I do deal with instructing them not to send me promotional material.

It works! Some weeks I get no mail at ll. :)

I also don't have a landline telephone, so no cold calling,
tps stops the calls as well if you do have a landline
Allth the things suggested are great if you live in the UK. However I get the impression that Polo lives in the States!
Anyway, things like TPS and MPS only work with decent companies who actually purchase a 'clean' database of contact names, numbers etc - which would exclude all the ones who dont want to be contacted and have opted out. Unfortunately, you'll still get phoned and written to by the more unscrupulous companies who just ring or write to anybody.
I dont mind unsolicited mail. It gives people employment, including the postman. Most of it goes straight in the bin, especially the ones telling me I have won a prize. Sometimes its useful, like vouchers for 7 papers a week for 2 which I have with the Telegraph. I feel disappointed if my mailbox ix empty!
