Hi - firstly hope this is in the right section - if not could someone advise me where to post it?

I have an HP Laser Jet 4100 mfp - it has just started leaving a thick black line across the top of the paper when photocopying from the glass and when photocopying from the feeder tray it doesn't copy at all.

I know from experience that phoning HP is a test in patience beyond all reasonable measure so wondered if anyone could help at all?

(I have cleaned it )

Many thanks

Sounds like something is out of alignment.

Do these links help?

Sounds like you have dirt or toner on the drum.

This can be checked my oiking out the toner cartridge and seeing if it has a flap that covers the light green drum.

Don;t expose the drum for too long as it's photo sensitive, but it should give to a chance to see if it has a line or mark on it.

If it has then you'd need to get a new toner cartridge.

However if there is still dirt or toner in the machine it may cause a new toner to get dirty.
I assume the line is more of a mucky smudge .... not a printed line??

what you describe can happen when the scan size is larger than the paper setting.
(or the paper setting is smaller - ie us legal)

Thanks to everyone for getting back to me. The line is a dark thick line - not grey or sludgy, but the problem only exits on the copying facility not when I print.
I did follow the HP link a few times but still no luck. I think it may be time to phone the HP line and listen to American Country Music as I'm on hold for 40 mins.
If the line doesn't print ....but does scan ... it's the scanner!!(duh!)
If the "pickup" was dirty you'd have banding
(I assume from what you've said the rest of the scan is OK? - if not is the lamp tracking? )

can you scan to the PC without printing?

.... it could be dirty glass ... the "pickup" scanning out of the area of the glass - or not scanning

could even be the drivers .... download the latest drivers .... uninstall the old .... reboot .... reload the new

then it's time to hear about the green green grass of home!!!!

I have now listened to Galveston, Rhinestone Cowboy and indeed Country Roads all morning. An engineer is coming tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for replying to me.
