XP all the way.

If you can afford it, strongly consider buying a Macbook. Comes with Mac OS X which is a huge improvement on any version of Windows, especially for photography and media issues.

Entry price is about 600 (with a student discount that Apple do).

Thank you everyone for your replys the mac is out of my price range unfortunatly, the one i am looking at is the Dell Vostra 1000....
hi peanut, it's only worth getting a laptop with Vista if you're planning to part cash up the higher end of the market. I bought a Fujitsu Siemens 2 months ago for 400, came with Vista... I hate the thing with a passion, get Vista, and you will seriously learn to loathe the darn thing. XP, for all it's faults, you can rely on it. And if you get a new laptop with a free Vista upgrade ticket, at least you'll always have the option.
I have been using Vista for a few months now and I love it.I've never had a single problem with it that couldn't be corrected with program updates and patches.
